Antique Chinese & Japanese PorcelainEuropean Ceramics & Works of Art
Pair of Chinese blue and white tiles, 18th century, decorated in underglaze blue with a central lotus flower, scrolling buds and leaves, the edges with four corner cartouches containing floral sprays and a rim of further scrolling leaves and flower heads
Condition:
Chips to edges
Notes:
Lotus (lian-hua) is a flower of great significance within Buddhism. The plant grows out of muddy earth yet remains pure, and so symbolises purity and spiritual enlightenment. Partially opened buds, as seen here, represent a level of enlightenment that may not be visible at first.
