Superb pair of Japanese Arita blue and white vases and covers, 17th century, of octagonal ovoid form painted in a rich underglaze-blue with ho-ho birds amongst peonies, kiku and hydrangea and rockwork in a fenced garden, above a narrow band of uchiwa, the shoulders with panels containing floral sprays, beneath uchiwa, the neck with flower heads, the tall domed cover similarly decorated with a tear-drop finial; height 85cm. 33 1/2in., condition: damage to both lids. Provenance: From a grand country house, Horsington Manor in Templecombe, Somerset which was acquired by the Bailward family in the 18th century. SOLD
