Chinese famille rose baluster jar, Yongzheng (1722-1735), painted in bright enamels with two men astride galloping horses with attendants following on foot carrying lanterns, all in a fenced rocky garden with a large pine tree, with star constellations and bats flying above, the neck encircled by a band of cloud and thunder (yunwen and leiwen) pattern in green.

Dimensions:

Height: 36.2 cm. (14 ¼ in.)

Condition:

Restoration to the neck base has been drilled for a lamp but now restored, two small star-cracks, only visible from interior; Old restoration but still presentable

Notes:

The scene on this vase is possibly taken from the episode of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in which Zhuge Liang (Kongming) descends from the mountains with Liu Bei (Xuande) to become his advisor and help him to form the third of the kingdoms. A Ming painting depicting the scene can be found in the collection of the Shanghai Museum and was included in the 2010 exhibition 'Telling Images of China' at the Chester Beatty Library. A famille-rose Yongzheng dish depicting the same scene was part of the Russell Tyson Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago and was sold at Christies on the 17th of September 2019.
