Chinese imari plate, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated to the centre with scholarly objects including a low table with brushpot, inkstone and scrolls, beribboned books, a ruyi-head sceptre and an archaic-form vessel filled with chrysanthemum, all amongst boughs of flowering peony with buds, foliage and asters; the wide rim with further vessels, including brushpots with scrolls and vases with coral and feathers in iron-red, amongst flowers and foliage; also with two fan-shaped cartouches containing rural views of lakeside dwellings in a mountainous landscape, in reserve against a band of blue ground with serrated leaf edges, foliate scrolls and a curling gilt design, the reverse with floral boughs in blue and red.
