Antique Chinese & Japanese PorcelainEuropean Ceramics & Works of Art
Chinese blue and white tile, 18th century, painted in underglaze cobalt blue with gilt highlights, the centre with five flower heads and four leafy sprays, the wide border with four flower baskets and continuous leafy scroll
Dimensions:
Diameter: 19cm.x19cm (7 1/2in.x7 1/2in.)
Condition:
Small area of repainting to corner
Notes:
The room in Rajasthan where they were installed was inaugurated in 1723. Some scholars argue that they were already installed in 1711 (without mentioning a source though).
Would the tiles have been shipped by the VOC? I have a detailed account of a Dutch Embassy visiting the palace in 1711. However, given the large quantity of the tiles they must have been an order rather than a gift.
