Chinese stoneware bowl, Yuan dynasty (1279-1368), of conical form, partially covered with a brown-black glaze which stops above the foot to reveal the buff stoneware body, the interior with three rust-coloured iron splashes.

Dimensions:

Diameter: 17cm. (6 11/16in.); height: 7cm. (2 3/4in.)

Condition:

Two minute frits to interior rim, one minute frit to bottom of external rim

Notes:

Vessels with dark glazes were treasured in Japan, where the practice of drinking tea became highly popular during the second millennium, as the pleasing contrast between the bright green tea, pale whisked froth and dark glaze was considered to heighten the aesthetic experience. The splash effect seen on this conical bowl was created by applying an iron-rich glaze on top of a black glaze with a slightly different iron oxide content. During firing, the iron-rich splashes would take on a rusty colour.
