Indian miniature 'Company Painting' of Arjumand Banu Begum, 19th century, gouache on ivory, set in a gold frame, dimensions: 2.5in. x 2 in. (6.4cm x 5cm). For a similar miniature see the V&A Collection, museum no. IM.277-1913. Arjumand Banu Begum, also known as Mumtaze Mahal (1593 –1631) was a Mughal Empress and chief consort of Emperor Shah Jahan. The Taj Mahal in Agra was constructed by her husband as her final resting place. Painting on ivory in India has an ancient history. However, this kind of portrait painting did not develop on a large scale until the 18th century, as a result of British influence. SOLD
