Chinese blue and white lighthouse coffee pot, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated with a lake scene, with a pair of geese among bamboo, the rim with a band of hatch-pattern, the lid with further geese and bamboo, surmounted by a blue finial
Height: 23.5cm. (9 1/4in.)
Hairline to rim, frit to spout, crack to handle, chip to underside of lid
Geese generally pair for life, and along with mandarin ducks represent marital bliss and fidelity in Chinese art. The symbolism perhaps would have translated for Western markets too, for whom such pots with shapes based on European silver or metal prototypes were intended.
