Ceramic Sculpture
The abstract design of “With a Twist” is inspired by the flowing lines of a rural landscape though; equally, as in all her pieces, they can be seen as purely abstract in dealing with line, volume, mass and color. Grid marks are painted or subtly etched into the surface, holes puncture the clay wall, giving access to the interior space and creating an illusion of depth and layers of meaning, a prominent feature in most of Heinz’ work.
Notes:
Soft slab construction, brushed Lithium glaze, Oxides and Biscuit slips, fired at 1035° C
Regina Heinz’ ceramic sculptures are hand built, using soft slab construction with brushed Lithium glaze, oxides, stains and slips and multiple- fired in an electrical kiln to 1035°C.
Regina has developed a special slab- building technique that emphasises the softness and tactile qualities of clay.
Large slabs are rolled out, cut and incised with a geometric design and shaped by hand while still soft. The slabs are pushed and bent into shape, while retaining their original surface texture to the highest possible degree. When dried sufficiently Regina joins the slabs to construct the final form.
After the first firing oxides, slips, stains and a Lithium Gaze are brushed on in layers in order to create depth and variation of color. The resulting highly painterly effect emphasizes the geometric, often grid-like design as well as the organic tactile texture of the clay surface and the random speckles of the brushed glaze. Thus Regina creates an interesting balance between chance and control, organic and abstract, soft and hard that inhabits all her pieces.
