Regina Heinz’ ceramic sculptures are hand built, using soft slab construction with brushed Lithium glaze, oxides, stains and slips and multiple- fired in an electrical kiln to 1035°C.

Regina has developed a special slab- building technique that emphasises the softness and tactile qualities of clay. Large slabs are rolled out, cut and incised with a geometric design and shaped by hand while still soft. The slabs are pushed and bent into shape, while retaining their original surface texture to the highest possible degree. When dried sufficiently Regina joins the slabs to construct the final form. After the first firing oxides, slips, stains and a Lithium Gaze are brushed on in layers in order to create depth and variation of color. The resulting highly painterly effect emphasizes the geometric, often grid-like design as well as the organic tactile texture of the clay surface and the random speckles of the brushed glaze. Thus Regina creates an interesting balance between chance and control, organic and abstract, soft and hard that inhabits all her pieces.

Notes:

Biography Regina Heinz is a ceramic artist, lecturer and designer, internationally known for her tactile ceramic sculptures and reliefs, with highly distinctive, abstract designs.

Emmanuel Cooper, a leading potter, curator and art critic, wrote of her work:

“Her pieces have a powerful sculptural quality and appear tactile and organic. The sensual curves of the forms suggest both the intimacy of the body and the flowing lines of landscape, though equally, they can be seen as purely abstract in dealing with line, volume, mass and colour”.

Regina studied Fine Art and Ceramics in Vienna, Geneva and London and has worked from her ceramics studio in South London since 1998. Regina received funding from the Crafts Council to set up her workshop. She is a Crafts Council Selected Member, an elected Fellow of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain, and a member of the International Academy of Ceramics.

Regina Heinz has lectured and taught workshops worldwide including at the Fule International Ceramic Art Museums in Fuping, China, the International Ceramics Festival in Aberystwyth, Wales and the International Ceramics Festival in Sasama, Japan.

Her award-winning work, both free-standing and wall-based, has been included in major art and ceramic fairs such as the International Ceramics Fair London, has been purchased by the National Art Collector's Fund and is held in major collections worldwide including the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England, the International Ceramics Museum in Faenza, Italy, the Yingge County Ceramics Museum in Taipei, Taiwan and the Museum of Contemporary Ceramics in Gifu, Japan. Her work is widely published in international magazines and books.

Her first collection of architectural ceramics was launched in 2012 when Regina was commissioned to create an exclusive art tile design for the American tile retailer Ann Sacks.

In 2013 she designed the cabin art work P&O’s luxury cruise ship Britannia, consisting of 6000 sculptural wall pieces for 2000 cabins, launched in 2015.

Since then Regina has specialised in art for architecture and has worked with leading interior architects and art consultants to create site-specific installations for private and public spaces that complement their setting while retaining their own artistic identity.

Her unique brand of undulating tiles – inspired by water and created to form large scale wall sculptures - is a distillation of her work as an artist. They have the same undulating surface, the same combination of fluidity and rigour as her one off sculptures. Informed by Regina’s background as a painter these distinctive installations introduce beautiful colour, luxurious surfaces, artistic design and stunning patterns of light and shadow into architectural spaces.

Clients include Areen Design, Collett Zarzycki, 1508 London, HBA, Alchemi Group, Stiff + Trevillion Architects, Muza Lab London, SMC Art Consultancy London, Goddard Littlefair London, Winch Design London and Visto Images Art Consultants Cyprus.

Her latest commission include is a 8 m by 1 m installation created for the foyer of the cultural centre Rhein Sieg Forum in Siegburg / Cologne, Germany as well as bespoke designs for yachts and the Address Harbour Point Hotel in Dubai in 2022. https://ceramart.net
