Extremely rare Chinese famille verte biscuit dish, early Kangxi (1662-1722), with rounded sides and everted rim, decorated with five horses galloping over swirling waves with high white crests, with scattered cherry-blossoms and Buddhist auspicious emblems, all against a dark green ground, with four further horses against a green decorated ground to the underside of the rim, diameter: 12 3/4in., 32.3cm; condition: hairlines and two small chips to underside of rim. A dish with similar decoration is illustrated in Butler, Medley & Little, 'Seventeenth Century Chinese Porcelain in the Butler Family Collection' (1990), p. 180, pl. 124. A smaller dish of this type decorated with one galloping horse is on display at the Guimet Museum in Paris (cat. no. 146). SOLD
