Rare pair of Chinese blue and white armorial dishes in the Japanese-style, c. 1752, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated in the centre with a tiger with bamboo, the border with eight panels containing bamboo, dragons, kylins, pine and cherry blossom, to the reverse with the arms of Walpole (or, on a fess between two chevrons sable three crosses crosslet of the first) quarterly impaling Cavendish (sable three stags' heads cabossed argent attired or, from the coronet flowing a long cap charged with a Catherine wheel), diameter: approx. 8 1/5in., 21.5cm; condition: hairlines and restored chips. This service was made for Horatio Walpole who married Lady Rachel Cavendish in 1748.
