Dutch Delft polychrome 'Pompadour' tile, c. 1610-40, depicting a quatrefoil containing oranges, daisies, foliage and scrolls, diameter: 5 1/4in., 13.3cm; condition: glaze chips. Provenance: From the Birgit and Bent Wolstrup Collection. Three versions of this tile are illustrated in Pluis, Jan, 'The Dutch Tile', p. 279, pl. A.01.21.01-03. The design for this tiles are thought to take their name from a dress pattern made for Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de Pompadour. SOLD
