Faenza maiolica 'quartieri' albarello, c.1600, decorated with an oval medallion with a lady in Roman dress holding a musical instrument bordered by a scrolling cartouche, the reverse with an acanthus-leaf cross-pattern cartouche, against a ground of scrolling oak foliage, all between continuous bands of scrolling foliage on a green ground and chain decoration, height: 11 13/1in., 30cm; condition: broken and re-stuck, drill hole near foot, chips. According to Dora Thornton and Timothy Wilson, the emigration of potters from Faenza to Palermo from the mid-16th century led to the adoption of Faentine decoration in Sicilian workshops by around 1600, making the attribution of some albarellos difficult.
