Rare English Creamware transfer-printed 'Bidston Hill' jug, c. 1800, decorated to one side with a with a merchant ship, the other with 'An East View of Liverpool Light House and Signals on Bidston Hill', with a key to 52 signal-flags, height: 9 5/16in., 23.8cm; condition: chip to foot, 2 small star-cracks to body. Provenance: With Gautier Collection label to base. The first lighthouse on Bidston Hill was built in 1771. The flags were flown to communicate approaching ships to a lookout in Chapel Street, Liverpool. SOLD
