Large Japanese Imari baluster vase and cover, 18th century, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze colour enamels with gilt highlights, the large baluster body decorated to either side with a four-panel folding screen (byōbu) painted with a mountainous landscape scene containing a pair of ho-ho birds amongst pine and blossoming boughs, with pagodas and mountains visible in the distance; the screens set against large peony heads, scrolling foliage and stylised ribbons; with scalloped compartments containing chrysanthemum and lotus flowers against dense scrolling foliage, the shoulders with alternating ogee-topped panels containing either lotus against a white ground or chrysanthemum against a blue ground, both with foliate scrolls in gilt behind; all against a gold ground densely decorated with curling leaves and flowerheads; the collar adorned with white flowers with cloud-like petals against an iron-red ground, the lid with further panels enclosing lotus and chrysanthemum and surmounted by a shishi dog knop
