Pair of Japanese Imari baluster vases and covers, c.1700, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze enamels and gilt to the large bodies with shaped cartouches containing a hawk perching upon the bough of a blossoming cherry tree, and fan-shaped panels containing a 'bijin' pulling a cart with a large jardinière of flowering chrysanthemum and grasses, and further panels containing various flowers including trailing wisteria, all against a ground of peony blossoms amongst scrolling foliage in underglaze blue with gilt highlights, the shoulders and cover with large curling ogee-shaped panels containing Japanese phoenix (ho-ho) and butterflies against a red ground, the neck with further cartouches with curling flowerheads in reserve and gilt, and gilt daisies inbetween, the domed lids surmounted by karashishi decorated in gilt and overglaze enamels
