Chinese Armorial famille rose punch bowl, c. 1765, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated to two sides with the arms of Lewin of Kent with Pollard of Cornwall in pretence, 'a sea lion proper, the tail nowed, holding between its paws an escutcheon gules charged with an escallop or, separated by sprays of flowers, diameter: 29.7, height 12.8 cm;condition: chip to rim neatly restored. Provenance: P. B. Cooke collection. A similar punch bowl is illustrated in David Sanctuary Howard 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain', Vol. I p. 575 pl.Q9. This bowl was part of a service commissioned by Samuel Lewinwho married Mary Millar, daughter of Mr Pollard, the consul of Aleppo in 1765. SOLD
