Chinese wucai baluster vase, Shunzi (1644-61), decorated with dignitaries and ladies in an interior scene with a fenced garden, rockwork and cloudscrolls, the shoulder with a band of cracked-ice and the neck with sprays of peony and cherry blossom, height: 18 1/4in. (46.4 cm.). This vase probably represents the Tang emperor Xuanzong (reigned 712-55) visiting the 'Moon Palace' of the lady immortal Chang E. in search of his lost love Yang Guifei. This was a popular play in the seventeenth century and was based on an old Tang period poem 'The Song of Regret'. SOLD
