Chinese famille-rose Chine de Commande Crucifixion plate, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated en camaïeu with overglaze lilac-pink enamels and gold with a scene of the Crucifxion. In the foreground four soldiers are drawing lots while behind the crosses stand Mary, St John and various onlookers. Diameter: 23.5 cm; Condition: hairline crack, small frit to rim and usual wear to enamels; Provenance: Hermani Collection. This plate was a popular export design and was often part of a series of biblical scenes from the life of Christ; there is a similar example in encre de chine listed in 'Chinese Export Porcelain' from the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, Catalogue by Dr. C.J.A.
