Japanese imari teapot and cover, Edo period (1603-1868), of globular form with applied handle and curved spout, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze enamels and gilt to the body with peony, chrysanthemum, small flowerheads, sprouting grasses and foliage, the base with a band of meandering wave pattern in iron red between narrow lines of underglaze blue, the rim with a band of diamonds, the lid decorated with further chrysanthemum and peony within a double circle; the spout base encircled by petals and the applied handle with moulded shells.
