Japanese blue and white Arita jug, circa 1680, the bulbous body variously painted in the Chinese 'Transitional' style with figures in a continuous river landscape surrounded by pine trees and rockwork, the waisted neck with pinched spout decorated with upright stylised flowers interspersed by formal applied design, the applied C-shaped handle decorated with a diagonal geometric pattern, with a hole to the top of the handle. Height: 9 ¾ in. (24.8 cm.). The handles of these jugs were made to be fitted with mounts after importation, for example, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art a similarly shaped vessel has contemporaneous Dutch silver mounts, Accession Number: 2002.447.44 and is illustrated in Brennan Ford, Barbara and Impey, Oliver R., ‘Japanese Art from the Gerry Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art,’ no.37.
