Chinese blanc de chine octagonal libation cup, early Kangxi (1662-1722), with incised lappets to the foot
Dimensions:
Height: 6.8cm. (2 5/6 in.)
Condition:
Two flakes to rim, glaze crack to base
Notes:
Libation cups were traditionally used as communal drinking vessels at sacred rituals or ceremonies. The octagonal form of this example reflects the importance of the number eight within both Buddhism and Daoism: the noble eightfold path taught by the Buddha, and the eight auspicious Buddhist symbols and the Eight Immortals (八仙; 'baxian') sacred to Daoist belief.
