Pair of Chinese blue and white bottle vases, Kangxi (1662-1722), the body decorated with two mythical beasts with forked tails and tufted heads above a band of waves chasing the flaming pearl among cloudscrolls, the neck decorated with flower sprays, scrollwork and stiff leaves, the splayed foot with lotus-scrolls, flower mark to base; height: 9 3/4in. (24.8cm) and 9 1/2in. (24 cm.). These mythical beasts may have been inspired by European heraldic designs of lions.
