Italian Faenza soup plate, Ferniani factory c. 1760-1800, decorated in the centre with flowering carnations in a fenced garden, the cavetto with four floral-cartouches against a diaper ground, the rim with flower sprays.
Notes:
This design is based upon a Japanese Arita original and was developed in the Ferniani factory in Faenza from 1760. A similar plate is illustrated in Wilson, Timothy, 'Italian Maiolica and Europe' (Ashmolean Museum Oxford, 2017), p. 307, pl. 148; There is a plate in the Ashmolean Museum of near identical design, accession number WA2014.4 from the Barrett bequest.
