Meissen teabowl and saucer, circa 1723-24, painted with cartouches containing chinoiserie figures with variously fruit and a bird, within a garden setting with floral branches, cactus, insects, birds, within gilt and iron-red scroll borders enriched with Böttger-lustre, with gilder’s mark ‘14’ to the base, Dreher's mark ‘ ’ to inner footrim of saucer; height of teabowl: 1 3/4 in. (4.6 cm.), diameter of saucer: 4 7/8 in. (12.2 cm.). See Schulz Codex, sheet 92, for the line drawing upon which the figure with the large pomegranate is based. The Codex was established by Johann Gregorius Höroldt, a painter who came from the Du Paquier porcelain factory in Vienna, and worked at Meissen 1720-24. A figure carrying a basket of fruits and flowers is also symbolic in classical western art of abundance. SOLD
