Bristol delftware polychrome ‘Adam and Eve’ plate, circa 1730-40, decorated to the centre with the biblical scene of the Temptation of Adam and Eve by the serpent while in the Garden of Eden, with blue dashes to the rim, diameter: 13 1/4 in. (33.8 cm.). For a similar example see the Victoria and Albert Musuem, C.149-1981 & CIRC.418-1950 which were probably made in Limekiln Lane or Brislington. For a useful discussion see, Archer M., ‘Delftware’, pp.84-85, figs.A19/A20. This was a popular scene to depict, Frank Britton cites 5 types of ‘Adam and Eve’ scenes in ceramic from this period which he links to print sources (see Britton, ‘English Delftware in the Bristol Collection’, pp. 49-50, fig. 3.34.).
