Rare set of four famille verte saucer dishes, Kangxi (1662-1722), decorated with scenes from Xixiangji, ‘The Romance of the Western Chamber’, the rims with a cellular border interspersed by ruyi heads, with apocryphal Xuande mark to base; diameter: 6 ¼ in. (16 cm.) The Romance of the Western Chamber was compiled by Wang Shifu (1260-1336) and relates the love story of Yingying and Zhang Sheng. It was popularly illustrated in woodblock prints by the painter Chen Hongshou (1598-1652). These scenes depict Zhang Sheng, standing in a long green robe, in conversation with monks and seeking aid from General Du against the rebellious troops of Sun Feihu besieging the monastery where Zhang's lover Cui Yingying is staying.
