Chinese famille verte square-section tapering vase, Kangxi (1662-1722), the sides with thin cellular borders framing a seeded green ground decorated with flower heads and butterflies, serving as a background to three variously-shaped panels on each side, containing precious objects, flowers and mythical beasts including a qilin, the sloping shoulders with a cellular design primarily in black; the trumpet neck with similar decoration to the body but with two panels containing precious and scholar's objects, the unglazed base with an inset square glazed panel painted with a lozenge, one of the eight precious objects (babao) denoting happiness and success.
