Pair of Chinese blue and white facetted hexagonal vases, Kangxi (1662-1722), the body decorated with alternating panels of a lady in a fenced garden and flowers in a jardieniere on a stand with precious Daoist emblems, against a cracked-ice ground, the long neck with florets between stylised lappet bands, the spreading foot with ruyi-shaped panels, the bases with the letter ‘G’ in underglaze blue; height: 11 ¾ in. (30 cm.) ; condition: restoration to the rim. Christiaan Jörg supports the theory of the 'G’ mark belonging to a particular person, probably a Dutch merchant in the 17th century, citing the similar use of a single initial to a group of blue and white Japanese apothecary bottles (see Jörg, ‘Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam: The Ming and Qing Dynasties’, p. 259). A pair of 'G'-marked bottles with a similar pattern but in famille-verte is also in the Rijksmuseum. Another blue and white pair are in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Collection No. LL 6450-51-52. SOLD
