Pair of Chinese Canton plates, circa 1880, one decorated to the centre with a group of three ladies being welcomed by dignitaries at the entry gate of a pagoda, the other with two men greeting a trio of ladies in a rocky garden while two more ladies look down from a balcony, the outer borders richly decorated with flowers, birds and butterflies, width: 21.1cm. (8 5/16 in.); 22.1cm. (8 11/16 in.) height: 17.3cm. (6 ¾ in.); 18cm. (7 1/16in.) condition: One with wear to enamels and gilding (one minute frit to reverse of rim), the other with six chips, two flakes to reverse of rim, wear to enamels and gilding. Butterflies (hudie) symbolise blessings or happiness and when accompanied by peonies mean 'may you have an accumulation of blessings, wealth and high social status'.
