Fine famille rose garden seat, Jiaqing (1796-1820), the bulbous body decorated at the foot with moulded dragons painted in pink enamels with white eyes and teeth above narrow bands of powder-blue and pink, the lower register with four fan-like pierced openings, the upper register with four pierced cash-coin roundels in gilt; the body painted with maidens in a fenced pavilion garden engaged in various pursuits amongst bowls of fruit and jardinieres of pine and flowers including blossoming lotus; some of the women holding Daoist emblems or musical instruments, another pair of ladies seated underneath a tree and playing a game of go, while two children representing the Hehe Erxian play inside the pavilion entrance and another pair of children play outside; all below a band of scrolling pink flowerheads, the top with a further gilt pierced roundel and a rocky garden scene with two elegant ladies holding either a vase or shallow dish, standing alongside a deer carrying peaches and a fenghuang, all within a band of scrolling lotus heads against a turquoise ground. Provenance:
Captain Richard Alsager (1781-1841), East India Company; acquired prior to 1830 and thence by descent. Captain Alsager returned from China to the UK in 1830. Famille rose garden seats of this date are rare especially with a provenance of this kind; included with this seat is a mother-of-pearl counter with the family armorial of Captain Alsager.
