German salt-glaze tankard with pewter lid, 18th century, decorated with blue and manganese, stamped scrolling bands of hunting hounds chasing hares to the top and bottom, the centre with knotted foliate design, the pewter lid with shell-shaped thumbpiece; height without lid: 15.3cm. (6 in.) height with lid: 18cm. (7 1/16in.), condition: hairline crack across base and splitting into a Y shape up the side (approx. 14cm. long), scuffing to base, original pewter attachment broken (lid held in pace with wire), chip to pewter thumbpiece, 3 chips to lid.
