Japanese kakiemon bowl, Edo Period (1603-1868), c.1690, with fluted sides and scalloped rim, decorated to the interior with peony heads and prunus blossom around a central imperial chrysanthemum medallion (kikumon), the exterior with flowers growing amongst bound bamboo above a red geometric scroll to the foot.

Notes:
The banded bamboo hedge design was frequently copied on porcelain in Europe, where it was sometimes mistakenly identified as a wheatsheaf.
