Pair of Chinese famille rose plates, early Qianlong (1736-95), decorated with a pheasant perched on a rock between red peony heads and a blossoming bough, the rims with swagged cartouches containing floral arrangements and songbirds flying overhead.

The pheasant (ye-li) is a symbol connected to Chinese royalty and is understood to represent the empress, while the peony (mudan) is commonly referred to as ‘queen of the flowers’.
