Pair of Chinese famille verte baluster jugs, Kangxi (1662-1722), with early gilt copper mounts, loop handles and covers, the pear-shaped bodies with six moulded lappet panels containing climbing boughs of peony issuing from rockwork, the feet with further ogee-shaped cartouches containing flower heads, the domed lids with blooming peony and flying insects, the loop handles decorated with leafy garlands and with shell-shaped thumb pieces.
Height: 18.5cm. (7 1/4 in.) and 19 cm (7 1/2 in.)
Metal fittings and mounts often instilled a piece with greater value; in this case they are functional and allow imported porcelain to be used in a western context, such as drinking beer. Roundbellied examples, as well as the more common cylindrical or tapering varieties, were based on traditional European silver shapes.
