St. Louis miniature crown glass paperweight, 19th century, with a central millefiori cane and twisted white-trimmed red and green ribbons alternating with white filigree twists radiating outwards and down the sides of the hollow blown weight.
Dimensions:
Diameter: 4.5cm. (1 3/4in.)
Notes:
The St. Louis glass manufactory was authorised by Louis XV in 1762, and within twenty years the company was creating very high quality glass crystal. Like other leading French manufactories Baccarat and Clichy, St Louis began producing paperweights in the mid-19th century. However, it was the only French factory to develop and produce so-called ‘crown weights’, with coloured ribbon and filigree twists cascading down from a central point. Sometimes ribbons of up to five different colours were used – generally the more colours included, the rarer the weight is considered to be.
