Chinese blue and white ginger jar and cover, Kangxi (1662-1722), decorated to the rounded body with plum blossoms in reserve against a blue cracked ice ground, the shoulders with a single band of hatch-pattern, the lid with further plum blossoms with a single flower on the top.
Dimensions:
Height: 13.9cm. (5 1/2 in.); height without cover: 12.5cm. (4 7/8in.)
Condition:
Piece out of side of cover neatly reinserted and small area of chips filled and two small chips to white glaze on top rim of cover neatly filled.
Notes:
Plum blossoms in the cold months of January and February, and is appreciated in various East Asian cultures as one of the early harbingers of spring. Paired here with cracked ice, a motif alluding to the thawing of winter frost, the jar’s symbolism is one of optimism and the promise of warmer months.
