Chinese blue and white double-walled bowl, Kangxi (1662-1722), with everted rim, the outer wall with openwork octagonal honeycomb pattern with four rosettes, the inner wall decorated in underglaze blue with flowering branches, the inner rim of the bowl decorated with sprays of peonies, diameter: 6 1/16in., 15.5cm; height: 3 1/4in. 8.5cm. , condition: 5 small pieces out from the rim and a small area of pierced work neatly restored; Provenance: from the collection of Doctor Elvir Landby, Rydaholm. This type of decoration is traditionally known as linglong ('delicate openwork' or 'devil's work'). The double-wall of the bowl was formed by luting the outer wall to the inner bowl at the rim and foot, the clay then would have been craved whilst dry but still pliant. For further details on the production of a similar double-walled bowl see Jorg, 'Famille Verte', p. 55, pl. 52. SOLD
