Chinese famille rose 'squirrel and vines' coffee cup and saucer, Qianlong (1736-95), moulded with brown squirrels clambering over polychrome vines, the saucer decorated in the centre with a roundel containing a flower-head, diameter of saucer: 4.6in., 11.7cm; condition: 1 tendril to cup broken, 2 tendrils and 1 grape broken to saucer. Squirrels and grapevines were a popular artistic motif used during the Ming and Qing dynasties, symbolizing a wish for generations of sons and grandsons.
