Chinese kraak blue and white charger, Wanli (1573-1619), decorated in the centre with a pair of phoenixes amongst sprays of flowers, the border with eight alternating panels of chrysanthemums and precious objects, diameter: 19 3/4in. 50cm; condition: neatly restored break across dish. The phoenix, symbol of the Empress, is rarely depicted on Kraak porcelain. Kraak pieces with phoenixes almost always have this style of border. For an illustrated example of a similar dish see Maura Rinaldi, 'Kraak Porcelain' (London, 1989), p. 104, pl. 94. SOLD
