Chinese famille verte double gourd vase, Kangxi (1662-1722), the lower section decorated with four panels of figures and landscapes against a red and white floral ground; one panel depicts Lin Hejing (also known as Lin Bu) a scholar from West Lake near Hangzhou who lived as a recluse with his servant during the late 10th and early 11th centuries. He was recognised in particular for his appreciation of the prunus blossom during late winter and early spring, and he is depicted here on his donkey accompanied by his servant who is carrying a sprig of plum blossom through the snow. The upper section has four roundels showing various landscape and river scenes alternating with scenes depicting flowers and crickets against a green and white floral ground; height: 18 in., 45.5cm; condition: restoration to the upper bulb.
