Octagonal famille-rose beaker and saucer, early Qianlong (1736-95), the saucer with a central panel containing sprigs of peony, chrysanthemum, prunus and orchid, the rim with four cartouches containing alternating jardinières of either lotus or peony and a panel containing chrysanthemum and foliage against a black ground to each of the canted corners; the beaker with further jardinières of flowers divided by panels containing chrysanthemum heads against a black ground.
Dimensions:
Diameter of saucer: 12.7cm. (5in.); height of beaker: 7cm. (2 3/4in.)
Condition:
Minor fritting; small firing fault.
Notes:
A saucer with the same pattern can be found in the Fitzwilliam Museum Collection, Cambridge, museum no. C.687-1991. A similar cup from the Samuel Putnam Avery Snr. (1822-1904) Collection was accessioned into the Metropolitan Museum of Art Collection in 1879.
