Chinese blue and white beaker vase, Kangxi (1662-1722), the upper register depicting the story of Wang Zhaojun (one of the four beauties of ancient China), the central band with sprays of flowers, the lower section with figures in a fenced garden with plantain, height: 16 1/4in., 41.3cm; condition: frit to footrim, a few pinpricks to the glaze. The story goes that Wang Zhaojun left her hometown to enter the harem of Emperor Yuan. During her journey, whilst travelling on horseback, she began to play a stringed instrument. A flock of geese flying above heard the music and seeing the beautiful young woman riding the horse forgot to flap their wings and fell to the ground. From then on, Zhaojun acquired the nickname "fells geese" or "drops birds." SOLD
