Antique Chinese & Japanese PorcelainEuropean Ceramics & Works of Art
Pair of Chinese famille verte moulded shell-shaped dishes, Kangxi (1662-1722), in the shape of a scallop shell, decorated in the centre with a medallion, flanked by flowering branches of peach blossom and magnolia, the rim with a band of underglaze-blue chain decoration, height: 6 3/8in., 16.2cm; condition: shallow frits to rim. Dishes of this type were used to serve shellfish and their shape probably derives from French or English silver prototypes. For an illustrated example of a similar dish see F. Lunsingh Scheurleer 'Chinese Export Porcelain: Chine de Commande', (1974), pl. 119.
