Chinese Loving cup and cover, late Jiaqing, c.1800-1810, upon a pedestal foot, the body with two twisted handles with moulded flowers and foliage at their terminals, decorative green bands and a central roundel to either side containing floral sprays in gilt and iron-red within a narrow green band with gilt shell chain; the lid with further gilt shell and green enamel bands and surmounted by a gilt finial.

Chips to rim, glaze crack and chip to rim of cover, finial re-stuck.
Notes:
Loving cups feature in the banqueting and wedding customs of many different European cultures, and this example, based on a Georgian silverware shape, would have been made specifically for the European market. Traditionally, loving cups were large vessels with several handles intended for communal drinking on festive occasions.
