Chinese Loving cup and cover, late Jiaqing, c. 1800-1810, with moulded double handles, decorated with two roundels containing sprays of flowers, with green decorative bands, height: 10 1/2in., 26.7cm; condition: chips to rim, glaze crack and chip to rim of cover, finial re-stuck. The form owes its origin to European requirements and may have been inspired by Georgian silver shape. Traditionally, loving cups were large vessels with several handles intended for communal drinking on festive occasions.
