Chinese blue and white 'Pompadour' charger, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated with a central roundel of peony, chrysanthemum and pomegranate, the rim with floral sprays and seed pods flanking cartouches alternately enclosing a fish or eagle under petal coronets, with a band of diaper-swastika decoration, diameter: 16 1/8in., 41cm; condition: Provenance: with label of E.A. Johnson (trading c. 1922-1932) at 49 Musuem Street, London to base. Produced for the French market the Pompadour pattern, which was also produced in opaque rouge-de-fer and gold, is popularly attributed to Madame de Pompadour. However it is unlikely that the eagle and fish vignettes represent Louis XV and Pompadour whose maiden name was 'Poisson'. SOLD
