Japanese Arita blue and white apothecary bottle, Genroku period c. 1700, of typical 'gallipot' form, decorated with branches of fruiting pomegranate and peony, height:8 7/8in., 22.6cm; condition: small glaze faults. Provenance: From the Collection of a Swedish Noble family. Gallipot's were produced in a number of sizes as Japanese export ware and were probably used as apothecary bottles or to store wine. The flanges around the neck allowed for a cloth covering to be fastened over the top. A similarly decorated gallipot can be found in the Ashmolean Museum Collection, Oxford; Accession no. EA1978.691.
