Pair of small Chinese blue and white 'Pronk-style' quadrangular vases, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated with branches of flowering peony, the feet with a band of stylized acanthus leaves, height: approx. 6 1/2in., 16.5cm; condition: one with chip to rim, small chips and fritting to edges, the other with small chips and fritting to edges, restoration to underside of foot-rim. The shape and botanical decoration of these vases are associated with Pronk's designs for the VOC. Such pairs of vases along with three covered vases would have formed a five-piece garniture set. A pair of similar vases with a purple ground are illustrated in William R. Sargent, Treasures of Chinese Export Ceramics from the Peabody Essex Museum, p. 289, pl. 151. SOLD
