Archive item - not for sale

Chinese blue and white archaistic baluster vase, Kangxi (1662-1722), with double chilong-form handles, decorated to the body with two ogee-shaped panels containing riverscapes and a figure paddling a sampan-boat, separated by precious objects, the neck with two ogee-shaped foliate panels on a scale-ground below various Daoist emblems, the flaring foot decorated with a band of lappets.

Dimensions:

Height: 39cm. (15 3/8in.)

Condition:

Drill hole to base

Notes:

The rare form and style of these handles derive from Ming dynasty bronze prototypes and are rarely found on Kangxi pieces. Fish, dragon and elephant-head handles are more frequently used to ornament the sides of vases. Given their size and placement, it seems most unlikely that the handles were meant in any way to be practical.
